The Pantum Durable series has entered the commercial printing market with "ultra-long lifespan and extremely low paper jam rate." Ranging from the Durable mini's 150,000 pages without component replacement to the Durable Pro's 400,000 pages of continuous output, it has raised durability standards to a new level. One core technology supporting this is ceramic heating fusing. This article analyzes why the Durable series abandoned traditional halogen lamps in favor of ceramic heating.

I. Technical Principles of Ceramic Heating

Ceramic heating fusing uses a high-thermal-conductivity ceramic plate as the heating element, directly bonded to the fuser film inner wall. When powered on, it releases energy almost instantaneously through Joule heating. Unlike halogen lamps that rely on tungsten filament near-infrared radiation, ceramic heating has a shorter thermal conduction path and lower interface thermal resistance, transferring heat directly to the fusing work surface. Ceramic materials achieve 15–25 W/(m·K) thermal conductivity with surface temperature differences controlled within ±3°C.

II. Four Reasons the Durable Series Chose Ceramic Heating

Zero-second warm-up, instant output. The ceramic plate has minimal thermal inertia, reaching 180°C in just 2–4 seconds, with some configurations achieving zero-second warm-up — no waiting after pressing print.
Significantly lower energy consumption. Short thermal path and high efficiency reduce operating energy by approximately 30% and slash standby energy by 90%, a notable saving for office devices on standby for extended periods.
Quiet operation, noise-free. Paired with a flexible fuser roller design, it eliminates abnormal noise from traditional metal bearings, making it suitable for open office environments.
More stable duplex printing. Flat fusing replaces roller-pressure fusing for more uniform paper heating, reducing back-side smudging and curling during duplex printing and ensuring consistent quality in high-volume output.

III. Comparison of Ceramic Heating and Halogen Lamp Routes

Each approach has its scenarios. Halogen lamps offer mature technology, a well-established supply chain, and strong high-power output, retaining advantages in mid-to-high speed models above 30ppm and extreme environments — which is why Pantum's 5103 and other platforms use them. Ceramic heating excels in instant start-up, energy efficiency, quiet operation, and duplex quality, better aligning with the Durable series' "durable + worry-free" positioning for small-to-medium office and home scenarios. Classic HP models like the 1020 and 1108 also use ceramic heating, confirming its reliability through long-term market validation.

IV. Industry Trends and Selection Considerations

Ceramic heating is gradually penetrating more commercial models, but its unit cost remains relatively high, with stringent demands on ceramic substrate sintering and yield. OEMs must weigh target scenarios, cost structures, and supply chain maturity. Pantum's dual-track strategy — ceramic for the Durable series, halogen for platforms like the 5103 — reflects a rational choice based on differentiated market needs, not a simple technological replacement.
